Equine Utopia

Equine Utopia:

Planning and Creating a Racehorse Retirement Facility

Submitted to the School of Interdisciplinary Studies (Western College Program, Miami University) in partial fulfillment of the requirement for the degree: Bachelor Philosophy, Interdisciplinary Studies.

This paper focuses on how to solve the sustainability problem facing the Thoroughbred racing industry. Thoroughbreds have traditionally been seen as a disposable resource to be bred, raced and subsequently disposed. Nonprofit organizations can be an extremely useful tool for implementing social change within this industry. A full discussion of the role the third sector has within the entire United States economy is presented along with guidelines for the care and management of horses and horse farms. This paper is a guide to plan and create a nonprofit equine retirement organization in order to interject a sustainability movement within the Thoroughbred racing industry.
